Zachary“I wish to go on a Disney Cruise”

Zak, age 10

Wish Adopted by: Ruth Warwick and Carol Thomas

Zak is a fun loving 10-year-old boy who enjoys watching TV, playing computer games and reading books. His favorite movie is Star Wars, he is a strong supporter of the San Diego Chargers and he loves banana cream pie.  But what sets Zak apart from other 10-year-old boys is his battle with Osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer.

Last year, Zak went through a partial amputation of his leg, and although he might have lost a small part of himself to cancer, he has not lost his love for life, spirit of adventure, or sense of humor. He has quickly mastered his prosthetic leg and continues to be an active boy.

When given the opportunity to have a wish, Zak’s chose to go on a Disney Cruise with his family. Some of the highlights of Zak’s trip were the time he got to spend with Mickey Mouse, and the time spent on Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island. When asked what this wish meant to him, Zak responds “having a wish granted helped me get through chemo because it gave me something to look forward to.” The whole cruise experience gave his family time to have fun and reconnect, and that is what Zak wanted the most.

Zak is an inspiration to everyone who meets him. As his mother Lisa puts it, “He has never wavered from that determination to become an active boy.” Zak looks forward to a bright future – he has already set goals to hike, kayak, and to run a mile in under 9 minutes!  “Zak cares more about what he can do in the future rather than what he looks like,” says his mom. We know that Zak will continue encouraging others with his captivating and determined spirit!
