“I wish to meet Shaun White”
Kyle, age 18
Kyle is outgoing, adventurous, and a huge sports fan. His biggest passion is for snowboarding. He was glued to the TV during the X-Games and 2006 Winter Olympics watching his idol, Shaun White, compete in snowboarding events.
When asked for his wish, it was no surprise that he wanted to hit the slopes with Shaun. As Kyle said in his letter, “I appreciated being referred to Make-A-Wish. It really gave me something to look forward to after I left the hospital.” The hospital was a familiar place to Kyle and his family, who had coped with Kyle’s congenital heart defect since childhood.
Kyle’s wish was granted in December 2008. It started off with a fun send-off at Dave & Buster’s game emporium in San Diego, orchestrated by Wish Granters Chris Sichel and Jon Husby. He and his mom Victoria, step-dad Rob, and sister Katie were then whisked by limo and plane to the slopes at Breckenridge, Colorado. On his big day, Kyle enjoyed a power-breakfast, lots of special gifts, and a whole afternoon of snowboarding with Shaun White himself.
Little did Kyle know that he and Shaun White would have so much in common. Their immediate bond sparked when they realized that both of them had had heart surgeries. Coincidentally, their surgeries were performed by the same doctor! So, not only did their day consist of snowboarding together, they also compared scars.
“Thanks will never be enough,” his family wrote. Kyle, now 19, literally felt “on top of the world. Since then, he remembers his wish day like it was yesterday.”
