“I wish to meet Marlee Matlin”
Caitlin, age 19

Caitlin is a courageous young lady who has endured many medical challenges and numerous surgeries. Caitlin’s wish was to meet actress Marlee Matlin; because they are both deaf, Caitlin felt a special connection to Marlee and was inspired by her. Marlee invited Caitlin to meet at her favorite Mexican restaurant in Pasadena for an afternoon of lunch and visiting. Caitlin and her family were chauffeured to Pasadena in a stretch limo. Caitlin and Marlee talked for two hours; the two compared high school experiences, talked about family, and chatted about acting. Marlee encouraged Caitlin in every area of her life even offering to put her in contact with a hearing aid provider she uses. Caitlin’s mother said that Marlee was the perfect wish because they can communicate directly with each other and that they were able to relate so well. “We wanted Caitlin to have something really special to offer a little balance to the many unpleasant and downright horrible things she continually faces,” she writes, “You succeeded! This was one of the best days of Caitlin’s life. She felt very special and important. The next day, she came home from school with a big smile and told us that ‘All the kids want to be like me!’”
