“I wish to go on a Disney Cruise”
Alex, age 4
Wish Adopted by: Alfred Antonicelli
Alex, who is 4, loves sports, action movies with superheroes, and ice cream. He’s very imaginative and just enjoys having fun – like most boys his age.
Unfortunately, Alex also is all too familiar with hospitals and doctor’s offices. “Since being diagnosed with leukemia two years ago, he has spent 50 nights in the hospital,” his mom said. Alex was referred to the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of San Diego as he was undergoing chemotherapy.
His one true wish, he told Make-A-Wish wish-granting volunteers, was to go on a big ship with his family and look for pirates.
Alex, his mom, and stepbrother Alfonso soon found themselves on a plane to Florida for their Disney Cruise. In the turquoise waters of the Bahamas, Alex kept his eyes open for any pirates along the way, while enjoying all the shipboard activities!
“He especially loved the fireworks show during the cruise,” his mom said. “He enjoyed playing ping pong, watching movies while in the pool, and the cookies and cake brought to his room.” When Alex tired after an activity, she put him in his stroller to roll around the deck. “Being outside in the sunshine and fresh air was really wonderful.”
The cruise included a day at Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island. Alex not only met Mickey Mouse, but the pirate captain of the Black Pearl, Captain Jack Sparrow himself!
The hope, strength, and joy Alex’s special wish brought, also extended to his family.
“We’ve never been on a trip just for fun, to relax,” said his mom. “When you’re going through this, you don’t realize how stressful it is; how much stress you are carrying around with you. The trip provided a special time where we could do something together besides go to the hospital. It provided such relief. Everyone came back happy and relaxed. I am so grateful for all that Make-A-Wish did for us.”
